Norway in January and Workshop Announcement - Norwegen im Januar - Workshop-Ankündigung
Having heard much about the photographic opportunities in Ole Dahle's hides in Flatanger, northwestern Norway I contacted the “Eagle man” on rather short notice in December to arrange a 3-days-stay for the winter. This place in northwestern Norway is famous and many of the best photographers have visited it and worked with Ole, Vincent Munier and late Fritz Pölking, to name only two of them.
Usually being booked a year ahead, Ole found a time-slot for me from January 29 to 31. “What can you expect in three days”, I was thinking. But as I had not more time due to job-obligations, I took the risk and headed from Berlin to Trondheim, continuing by train to Steinkjer and being picked up by Ole there. I was hoping for a decent picture or two of Golden Eagle. Far from it: In three days I got more excellent pictures of this superb species than I managed in many weeks of searching in other strongholds of the species in the German and French Alps.
Die Foto-Möglichkeiten bei Ohle Dahle im nordwestnorwegischen Flatanger sind berühmt. Viele der besten Naturfotografen haben hier gearbeitet - Vincent Munier und Fritz Pölking sind nur zwei Beispiele.
Obwohl ich nur drei Tage zur Verfügung hatte, wagte ich Ende Januar das Risiko und besuchte den "Eagle man" in der Hoffnung auf ein paar gute Fotos in der kurzen Zeit. Weit gefehlt: In drei Tagen gab es mehr Gelegenheiten, Steinadler in spektakulärer Kulisse zu fotografieren als ich sie in vielen Besuchen in den Alpen insgesamt hatte.
From wide angle (70mm focal lenght above) to detail studies and closeup-portraits ( below) - in Flatanger nearly everything seems possible.

The Eagle Hide arranged just perfectly by Ole and at least one, sometimes two adult Eagles visited the site up to three times per day feeding on red fox or Willow Ptarmigan we offered to them.
Das Adler-Versteck ist von Ole exzellent in eine wilde Berglandschaft integriert worden. Das nahebei brütende Steinadler-Paar besuchte die Fütterung ein bis zweimal am Tag, um sich an den ausgelegten Füchsen oder Moorschneehühnern zu stärken, die Ole von einheimischen Jägern bezieht. (In Norwegen ist das Verwenden von bleihaltiger Munition übrigens seit längerem verboten). Die tägliche Zeit im Versteck beträgt zu dieser Jahreszeit rund zehn Stunden, von denen etwa sieben bis acht Stunden gutes Fotolicht herrscht.
The beautiful and remote Valley offers many different settings and scenes for photography. Basically any visit of an Eagle is different. One more good thing about the place: There is no mobile phone reception - once in the hide you are really alone.
Das wunderschöne und entlegene Tal ermöglicht Fotos aus verschiedenen Perspektiven. Und: Es gibt keinen Handy-Empfang, sodass man für zehn Stunden wirklich ungestört und allein ist.
Flightshots of the arriving and leaving Eagles were taken either with 300 mm lens or with 70-200 mm. As the Eagles also visited often in dusk or dawn, more abstract approaches were possible - or necessary.
Die Flugaufnahmen wurden entweder mit einem 300- oder einem 70-200 mm-Objektiv aufgenommen. Besuche der Adler in der Dämmerung ermöglichen abstraktere Motive.
Having travelled a lot and arranging hides for workshops myself, I have to say that Ole’s level of professionalism is unmatched by anything I saw so far. The feeding site is located in a wonderful remote and natural habitat enabling many different settings for photography. The bait consisted of prey the Eagles feed on naturally, Ptarmigan, Fox, Grouse etc. The hide is extremely spacious, comfortable and cosy. The arrangement of the bait allowed for photography with focal length’s from 500 millimeters down to 70 millimeter!
Ole hat es in den 20 Jahren seiner Erfahrung mit den Adlern zu wahrer Meisterschaft im Schaffen exzellenter Foto-Bedingungen gebracht. Das Foto-Versteck ist komfortabel, sogar beheizbar und ausreichend groß, um sich mit leichten Verbiegungen sogar aufrecht zu stellen. Die Anordnung der Köder erlaubt Aufnahmen im Brennweiten-Bereich zwischen 70 und 500 Milimetern.
The fjords of Flatanger are home to more than a dozen White-tailed Eagle pairs. Getting there in winter is cold but fun.
Die Fjords von Flatanger sind auch Brutgebiet von mehr als einem Dutzend Seeadlern.

A boat trip of several hours on the beautiful and wild Sorfjorden was cold but extremely productive. No less than 22 times White-tailed Eagles came to pick up fish Ole was throwing for them. Again, excellent opportunities for “Wide angle”-Photography with a focal length of 70 millimeters allowing us to portray the birds in their wild and unique Fjord-habitat.
Eine Bootsfahrt zu den Seeadlern dauert rund vier Stunden. Die ersten Adler umfliegen das Boot schon unmittelbar nach Auslaufen aus dem kleinen Hafen. Bei unserer Ausfahrt kamen Adler insgesamt 22 mal. Fotos mit Brennweiten ab 70 Millimetern ermöglichen es, die Vögel als Teil ihrer Umwelt zu portraitieren. Für Nahaufnahmen ist ein 300 Milimeter-Objektiv die Linse der Wahl.
On my last evening Ole picked us up and we went to the mountains to witness the spectacular phenomenon of Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis. You cannot get more in three days.
